Board of Directors

John Nelson has been in church ministry for over 35 years. He served faithfully for many years as a deacon, and was later ordained as an elder at Rhema Christian Center Church in Washington, DC.

In his early years, John attended public school in South Carolina where he was born. He also lived in Connecticut and attended school there. John relocated to Washington, DC and received his high school diploma from Cardozo High School. He attended Wilberforce University in Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. John later worked for Opportunity Industrialization Training Center in bookkeeping until he dedicated his life to serving God in multiple capacities at Rhema Church.

In Washington DC, John met the love of his life, Mary, and from this solid union of 35 years, they have two daughters, Nichele Marchal and Keysha Nelson. He has three grandchildren, Tamiya, Ta’ra, and Timothy Marchal, who love him dearly.

John is currently a supervisor at Rhema Christian Center School. He has over 31 years of experience in Christian education. John’s winning attitude, positive work ethics, and loving spirit are essential to the effectiveness of the organization. John is well-loved by students, past and present, and has been shown much appreciation for being a faithful bus driver for the school, and occasionally for the church, on hundreds of trips and outreach events.

John continues to work in finances. He works with Rhema School’s bookkeeping and occasionally assists the Pastor in this area. John has been an invaluable team member to Rhema Christian Center Church for many years. John is dedicated to serving God and doing His will in whatever role comes his way.
Pastor Jonathan I. Smalls, Sr.

Question:
   Who is he?

Background:  Pastor Jonathan I. Smalls, Sr. is the second of four sons of Deacon Nathan (deceased) and Deaconess Ethel Smalls. He was born and raised in Cross, SC and was an active member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Jonathan served as Sunday school teacher and member of the Baptist Training Union. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of South Carolina (USC) and a Master of Science degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Phoenix. Jonathan was formally trained in ministry under Bishop Clarence C. Givens (deceased), Pastor Doris Givens (deceased), and Pastor Arvel Givens, and is a 1990 graduate of the Givens Bible College in Washington, DC. He is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the US Air Force Reserves.

Jonathan’s life was permanently enriched and blessed in 1977 when he met his future wife, Lila, at USC while serving on the Student Christian Fellowship board and singing in A Touch of Faith Gospel Choir. Upon graduation in 1979, Jonathan was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force, and on July 7, 1979 Jonathan and Lila were married. Jonathan and Lila have four wonderful children: Jonathan Jr., David, Anissa, and Jaron.  Their children are all anointed musicians and use their gifts to praise God.

In September 1979, Jonathan was assigned to the Air Force Data Services Center in the Pentagon, and subsequently moved with his family to the DC Metropolitan area where they lived for 30 years. God had reasons for relocating Jonathan and his family to the DC area.  Soon after their arrival they joined Rhema Christian Center Church, and in 1981 Lila received a miraculous healing under the teaching and healing ministry of Bishop Clarence Givens, Pastor.  In 1986, the Air Force began planning to relocate Jonathan to Mississippi, but God had other plans.  Recognizing that God’s Word was more important than his military career, Jonathan left active duty status and made a home for his family in Maryland. He later joined the Air Force Reserves where he retired as a lieutenant Colonel in 2007.  Jonathan’s years of membership at Rhema Christian Center Church were fruitful, and the Lord used him and his family mightily. They were an integral part of the church and wore many hats. Jonathan served as an ordained deacon, elder, and member of the ministerial staff.  He was member and director of the church orchestra; a musician with the Evangelistic Outreach Ensemble; a Givens Bible College instructor; Prison Ministry worker at the Youth Services Center in DC; and the committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 1825, Cub Scout Pack 1825, and Girl Scout Troops 5103, 5104, and 5105.

Jonathan was sent out by God from Rhema Church as an ordained minister of the Gospel and has relocated to Fayetteville, NC. He and Lila are founders and pastors of Divine Restoration Church which was established in August 2010. Jonathan is Senior Pastor.
